What to Expect

Walking into a health clinic for the first time can be a bit overwhelming, especially when you’re in pain. Below are the most common things our new patients ask to help you feel prepared and at ease for your first visit.

General Clinic Questions

No, you do not need a referral from a medical doctor to see any of our practitioners (Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Massage Therapists, etc.). However, please check with your private insurance provider, as some specific extended health plans may require a referral to reimburse you for the cost of treatment.

We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily.

  • Lower body issues (hips, knees, ankles): Shorts are ideal.
  • Upper body issues (neck, shoulders): A tank top or loose t-shirt works best.
  • Coming from work? We have private changing areas available for your convenience.
Initial assessments typically last between 40 to 60 minutes, as we take the time to conduct a thorough history and physical exam. Subsequent follow-up appointments are generally shorter, ranging from 20 to 45 minutes depending on the therapy.

Think of your first visit as a “discovery” session.

  • The Chat: Your practitioner will sit down with you to hear your story. We want to know when the pain started, what makes it worse, and, most importantly, what goals you have (like playing with your grandkids or getting back to the gym).
  • The Assessment: We’ll look at how you move. This might involve some simple tests of your strength, flexibility, and nerves.
  • The Plan: We don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all.” We’ll explain what we think is going on and create a plan specifically for you. Usually, we’ll get started with some initial treatment right then and there.
Not at all! This is the “OHP Advantage.” If you’re seeing our physiotherapist but they think a quick adjustment from our chiropractor or some soft-tissue work from our massage therapist would help you heal faster, they’ll talk to each other and coordinate your care. You get the benefit of a whole team’s expertise.

Treatment Questions

This is the most common question we get! The honest answer is: it depends on your body. Every body heals at a different pace. Some feel relief after one or two sessions, while chronic injuries may take several weeks of consistent care. After your assessment, your practitioner will give you a clear roadmap for your recovery.

This is a very normal thing to worry about! The truth is, we are here to relieve pain, not cause it. Sometimes, when we work on a tight muscle or move a stiff joint, you might feel a “productive” discomfort, the kind where you think, “Ooh, that’s exactly where the spot is.” You might also feel a little bit like you’ve had a workout the next day.

However, you are always in control. If anything feels too intense, just tell us. We can always adjust our pressure or try a different technique. We want you to leave feeling better and more relaxed than when you walked in.

Insurance & Billing

Yes! We offer direct billing to most major extended health providers (such as Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, and Manulife). We bill them directly so you only pay the remaining co-pay at the time of your visit.
We are a qualified provider for ICBC claims. Under the Enhanced Care model, you are often pre-approved for treatment immediately following your accident. Just bring your claim number to your first visit.
